A March to Remember

©2004 Copley News Service, 2/17/2004 February is Black History Month primarily because Abraham Lincoln's birthday is Feb. 12. Unfortunately, the political party he helped to found has lost its historical recognition as the Party of Civil Rights. As I've said previously: The Democratic Party had a terrible history and overcame it; the Republican Party had a great history and turned aside.

New anti-tax leader rises from ashes of measure

BY HARRY ESTEVE

Measure 30's crushing defeat did more than force another round of state budget cuts. It crowned a new king of Oregon's anti-tax movement. The one-time ruler, Bill Sizemore, has faded from the landscape, his political organization in shambles after a Portland judge ruled it a "sham charity." Now the effort is being led not by the next crusading personality, but by a tightly run and well-financed national group with a long agenda: Citizens for a Sound Economy.

Anatomy of a fraudulent “grassroots” campaign: Citizens for a Sound Economy

BY Noah Page

The campaign by the right-wing organization Citizens for a Sound Economy (CSE) to overturn a legislatively approved tax increase in Oregon and implement more than half-a-billion in cuts to public services was presented by both CSE and its supporters as a “grassroots” political operation. This claim is worthy of serious examination.

Anti-Tax Brushfire

On Tuesday, Oregon’s voters did what their compatriots in several other states have recently done: they shot down a tax hike. It is the latest blast fired in a tax revolt that is sweeping the nation. It is not a tea-in-the-harbor type of revolt, but one that is quietly stirring in ballot boxes across the country. Leading the charge are concerned taxpayers no one in Washington, DC has ever heard of, but those in the halls of power would do well to head the message these citizen-leaders repeatedly send: Americans do not want to pay higher taxes.
