Florida Governor Signs Forfeiture Reform into Law

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed legislation that requires law enforcement to make an arrest before seizing property believed to be connected to a crime and increases the evidentiary standard the government needs to permanently keep seized property. The bill also offers procedural reforms, such as a $1,000 filing fee and $1,500 that the government needs to pay before beginning forfeiture proceedings against seized property. The bond would be payable to the property owner if the government fails to produce evidence that the property is connected to illicit activity.

Bringing Labor/HHS Bill to House Floor Should Be a Priority for Ryan

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has made the theme #ConfidentAmerica a key part of his speakership. This, along with his assertion that "As leaders, we need to raise our gaze and raise our game and talk about ideas," signals a new era in the House. There is a way to tangibly demonstrate that our country is confident and talking about ideas: If the appropriations process takes place this year, the first bill on the House floor should be the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education bill.

The Lunacy of the Left Embracing Dictators

The idea of American exceptionalism has been embedded in our DNA for generations. It is the faith-based belief that, as Ronald Reagan put it, America is a “shining city on a hill.” Do modern liberals believe that?

FreedomWorks' Congressman of the Month - John Ratcliffe

The Class of 2015 brought in a number of strong, liberty-loving members to the House of Representatives. All around the country, political newcomers were winning elections by campaigning for lower taxes, less government, and more freedom. After just a year of governance, few have delivered on those ideas the way that Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-TX) has, never failing to put his legislation where his mouth is, winning FreedomWorks’ FreedomFighter Award with a first-year score of 95 percent on the FreedomWorks Congressional Scorecard.

In Search of State Pension Reform

Recently, the public debt crisis in Puerto Rico has sparked widespread discussion about the need for public pension reform. The island territory is already $72 billion in debt, with shortfalls in the public pension fund of up to $30 billion. Without major changes in government spending patterns, Puerto Rico is in danger of becoming insolvent, sending the already brittle economy into a death spiral. While many on the left call for the immediate restructuring of Puerto Rico’s debt, the island’s plight is just the latest example of a state or territory misusing and abusing their public pension system, demonstrating the dire need for reform.
