Regulating Freight Rail Switching Puts Us On the Wrong Track

“By stripping away needless and costly regulation in favor of marketplace forces wherever possible, this act will help assure a strong and healthy future for our Nation's railroads and the men and women who work for them.” – President Jimmy Carter”

Renewable Fuels Are Toxic DC Swamp Water

While President Trump promised to “drain the swamp,” he also voiced his commitment to the biofuels industry and the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). These promises are in direct conflict. No federal program epitomizes the metaphorical swamp water of Washington better than the RFS.

Appropriations Bill Could Defund the Justice Department's Effort to Take Property Without Due Process

The House of Representatives will consider the Make America Secure and Prosperous Appropriations Act, H.R. 3354. The bill consolidates the eight remaining appropriations measures for FY 2018, including Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) and Transportation and Housing and Urban Development (T-HUD). The House has already passed one consolidated appropriations bill, H.R. 3219, which authorized spending for the Department of Defense, the legislative branch, the military and veterans affairs, and energy and water.

Life as an Intern at FreedomWorks

This summer I had the privilege of working as one of seven summer interns at FreedomWorks in Washington, D.C. I eagerly wrote my application essays, completed my interview, and anxiously awaited an acceptance email. After a few nerve-racking days, I received the email that I had been waiting for. I would join the development team and started planning my move from Florida to the nation’s capital for the summer.

Amazon's Genius Mocks the Fed and Its 2% Inflation Target

Amazon’s purchase of high-end grocery retailer Whole Foods was approved last week. That the federal government had any role at all in the combination of two private companies is on its own an offense to common sense. Government barriers erected to mergers trample on property rights, restrain economic progress for crucial information about the good or bad of tie-ups needlessly reaching markets late, plus readers must consider the unseen: the economic activity not taking place thanks to the forced duplication of effort that is an effect of antitrust.

September Will Be a Very Busy Month for Congress

September may be the busiest month of 2017 for Congress. There is a long list of must-pass legislation on the agenda, including the debt limit and appropriations for at least part of FY 2018, when Congress reconvenes on Tuesday, September 5. The calendar, however, isn't kind. There are only 12 legislative days scheduled in the House and 17 in the Senate.

'Keep It Simple, Stupid'

One of the most enduring lessons from the Obamacare fiasco, is that to win a political battle it is best to keep the message simple. If there are too many moving parts to a plan, if Americans don’t understand what the politicians are doing, or if there are parts of a bill they don’t like, it probably will go down in flames.

Support the CBO Show Your Work Act, S. 1746

On behalf of our activist community, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to support the CBO Show Your Work Act, S. 1746, introduced by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). The bill would require the Congressional Budget Office to make its models and data available to Congress and the public.

The Genius Of Nothing: The Unsung Economic Lesson Of Donald Trump's Presidency

Modern stock-market commentary is always amusing. Maybe it’s the desire among writers to secure clicks in the age of the internet, but so much of the media chatter about markets focuses on the coming “boom,” “crash,” or the always “eerie” similarities to 1929, 1987, or 2008. That it does is a sign of how worthless most equity commentary is.
