Education Needs a Shot of the Free Market

It might seem strange to suggest that the American educational system look to bourbon, but maybe that is just what they need. Maker’s Mark had a little lesson in free market economics this week, and schools should take note.

How You Can Save Your Country

Government goes to those who show up, right?  We've learned that we can't go to sleep and expect our nation to survive. Those with a penchant to support overbearing government programs to solve every societal ill never rest. Those of us who want to rein in government spending and fight for individual liberty cannot rest either. To limit government and keep it honest, we can't start at the top. We have to start at the bottom, at the most local level, where the trouble  often starts. The best place to start saving the country is right where you are. Local government controls much of what you and your family does on a daily basis.  Whether it's water rights, local taxes, street signage or the curriculum being taught in your schools, you should have a voice and be involved.  Find your passion and get busy. There are some activities that are easy to start doing that can produce immediate results, and give you a great sense of accomplishment along the way.

The Fallacy of Government Assistance

Throughout American history, there have always been those that have fallen on hard times.  From British poor laws, brought over by the colonists, to today’s myriad of welfare programs, America has a strong foundation of seeking to help those in need.  However, what started as a very simple program has become convoluted, corrupted and ultimately fails to lift people from poverty to prosperity.  While examples of government assistance failures abound, none may be so evident as that of the current situation in New Mexico.

A Democrat, a Republican and an Independent Plead for Responsible Governance – Reduce the Debt and End the Corruption

Over 2,000 years ago, Polybius observed the beginning of the decline of Rome.  Polybius foresaw the politicians' lust for power would result in deterioration and decline:

The Broken Windows of Chelyabinsk

Early Friday morning a meteor screamed from the sky, creating a jagged contrail and exploding over a city in Russia’s Ural mountains. Several dashboard cameras captured the amazing descent, while handheld cams recorded the jarring boom that seemed to set off every car alarm in central Asia. The footage taught me three important facts:

Sequester: Insincerity and Mendacity

Democracy and Power 108: ObfuscationWherever politics intrudes upon economic life, political success is readily attained by saying what people like to hear rather than what is demonstrably true. Instead of safeguarding truth and honesty, the state then tends to become a major source of insincerity and mendacity. —Hans F. Sennholz

"Final" Deadline Arrives for Health Insurance Exchanges, Majority of States Still Resisting ObamaCare

Today marked what was to be the final deadline for states to submit their plans for a state-federal partnership to set up a health insurance exchange in order to comply with ObamaCare.  However, with 27 states currently refusing to set up their own exchange, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) now finds itself needing to set up its own exchange in each of these states before the statutorily mandated October 1st deadline.

The Cruelty of the Minimum Wage

In his State of the Union speech Tuesday, President Obama called for an increase in the federal minimum wage, gloating that it had been endorsed even by his vanquished moderate Republican opponent in the 2012 campaign. A minimum wage increase is not needed, and would harm those it's supposed to help.

A New Hope for Arizona Kids

Kasey Locke is a bright, beautiful six-year-old girl. But she faces challenges most kids never will. At age three, Kasey was diagnosed with autism. When she started kindergarten at her Phoenix, Ariz., public school, Kasey’s parents worked with school officials to incorporate a new learning method that worked well for her. When the school didn’t apply these methods, her parents continued to tutor her after school.
