Tax Freedom Day: April 12

According to the Tax Foundation, today marks Tax Freedom Day 2011. This means that Americans have worked over three months, from January 1st to April 12th, before they have earned enough money to solely pay off their total tax bill at the federal, state and local levels. We are required to work 102 days or 28 percent of the year for the government while having the remainder of the year to pay for all our necessities.

Support the RSC Budget!

This week the House of Representatives will first vote on the recently struck deal to avert a shutdown, which funds the government for the rest of this fiscal year while cutting billions. They will then vote on their budget for next year. There will be several different budgets voted on and your representative needs to hear from you about which one you support.

FreedomWorks Letter Support H.J. Res 56 Balanced Budget Amendment

Dear FreedomWorks member, As one of our million-plus FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to call your representative and ask him or her to cosponsor H.J. Res 56, a balanced budget amendment which would require Congress to balance the federal budget every year. Introduced by Rep. Walsh (R-IL), it would limit spending to 18 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it would require a two-thirds majority vote in both chambers to raise taxes, a three-fifths vote to increase the debt limit, and similar levels to exceed the limit in the case of war.

EPA Gets Cut in Spending Deal

There has been a vociferous debate in both the House and Senate over whether the Environmental Protection Agency should have the power to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.  While the effort to rein in the EPA has stalled in the Senate, Republicans were able to secure a cut of 1.6 billion to the ambitious agency’s baseline in the recent continuing resolution that averted a government shutdown.

The Budget, Check; Your Move, Mr. President

Paul Ryan’s budget should dismiss any notion that the new Congress is not serious about reform. Previously, critics might chirp that any proposed cuts were merely for political points, but now the Budget Committee chairman’s proposal tackles out-of-control entitlement spending head-on and calls for reducing wasteful defense spending as well—not a traditional goal of previous Republican establishments.

Urge PA Lawmakers to Vote Yes On SB1

Today, the Pennsylvania Senate Appropriations Committee is voting on Senate Bill 1, the "Opportunity Scholarship and Educational Improvement Tax Credit Act."  Senate Bill 1 will allow students from failing and often violent schools the opportunity to pick the school of their choice regardless of zip code.  SB1 will grant low-income children in low-achieving schools a scholarship to attend a better public or private school of their choice without raising taxes or spending more money.
