The Bipartisan Spirit

I'm busy working on some other projects, so posting may be light again today, but in the meantime, I've got an op-ed on the stimulus package in today's American Spectator:

FreedomWorks Opposes Nanny State Regulations on Consumer Credit

The Virginia General Assembly is currently considering 20 different bills to implement cumbersome regulations that would restrict or effectively eliminate the use of payday advances for Virginia consumers. These regulations would seriously limit financial choices for Virginians, and FreedomWorks opposes government knows best intervention into peoples finical decisions. Payday advances are a specialty product and are unsecured and high-risk, and as such may carry higher interests rates than a typical credit card because of the increased risk to the lender.

FreedomWorks Cheers Opening of New Broadband Market in New England

WASHINGTON, DC. Expanding the availability of broadband internet to rural communities is a top public policy goal in the states of New England. Broadband expansion takes a serious investment. Fortunately, the market is ready to respond to this need and deliver the super-fast connections that will allow rural citizens to take advantage of the internet.

Expansion Anyone?

Over at Reason, Steve Chapman has a devastating piece on the stimulus package. The whole thing is worth a read, but this passage is especially worth noting:

The Fiscal Stimulus Pander

The New York Times has an article up today reporting on how various stripes of economist view the just-announced fiscal stimulus package.  What's notable is that, though the critiques of the package differ wildly, nearly everyone agrees that what the package, as proposed by the House, is a political effort -- not a substantive policy fix.  So on one hand, we get free-market advocates of the FreedomWorks stripe making statements like this:

How Should Conservatives Talk About Global Warming?

NRO's Jim Geraghty makes a good point today when he argues that, yes, conservatives really do need to take global warming fears in the electorate seriously.  Here's the gist:

Preserve Credit Options in Virginia

Dear Virginia Lawmaker, On behalf of FreedomWorks, a national grassroots organization with thousands of members in Virginia, I am writing to urge you to avoid passing new regulations or restrictions on the payday lending industry. As you know, the General Assembly is currently considering 20 different bills to implement cumbersome regulations that would restrict or effectively eliminate the use of payday advances. These regulations would seriously limit financial choices for Virginians, and should not be enacted by the General Assembly.
