Gov. Daniels' Cigarette Tax Hike

Following the lead of Governor Ted Kulongoski in Oregon, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels is pushing a statewide healthcare plan to be funded through an increase in the cigarette tax. The increase would raise Indiana's 55.5 cent tax an extra 25 cents. The tax passed its first hurdle Wednesday as the Senate Health and Provider Services Committee approved the plan by a 9-0 vote. Once again, we see our lawmakers punishing the taxpayers because they can't control their spending habits.

FreedomWorks "Key-Votes" H.J. Res. 20, the Democrat Omnibus Appropriations Bill

On behalf of more than 800,000 FreedomWorks members nationwide, I write to urge you to vote NO on H.J. Res. 20, the erroneously labeled “continuing appropriations" resolution. A clean continuing resolution would leave government programs funded at their current levels, but no more and would save taxpayers over $6 billion for FY07.

McCain Changing Tone on Taxes?

The Chicago Sun Times' Robert Novak examines Senator John McCain's tax record in response to the Senator's recent claims of being a champion for lower taxes: "I've never voted for a tax increase in 24 years," he told me last week. "Never, ever, not under any president including President Reagan, and I will never vote for a tax increase, nor support a tax increase." But will this be enough to convince the GOP's conservative base that have always looked at McCain with suspicion from issues ranging from global warming to earmark reform?
