Staggeringly Wasteful New Military Aircraft Finally Goes into Service

BY

Even by Defense Department standards, the new V-22 Osprey tilt-prop plane is extraordinarily expensive and dangerous. The Washington Post reports that the aircraft is finally coming online after twenty years of cost overruns, fraud, and accidents claiming 26 lives. At a staggering $109 million per plane, its hard to see the value to the taxpayer or the military.

Boca to state: stop messing around in local business

BY John Johnston

It’s not that Boca Raton Deputy City Manager George Brown doesn’t like consumers. “We just don’t want the state messing around in local business,” he told The Boca Raton News. Which is why Boca’s city council has approved a resolution opposing HB 529 – called the Consumer Choice Act of 2007, a proposed law dealing with what it calls “video programming” but what amounts to what everyone else calls “cable TV.” Delray Beach has approved a similar resolution opposing the bill.

George Will Doing What He Does So Well.

George Will on global warming craziness.  Without ever using the term "weighing the costs and benefits," Will is able to convey the basic issue:  Wild eyed policy proposals require trade offs.  While it is easy to feel morally superior, the actual effects of our decisions are less obvious.

Heat On Sarbox May Grow As Euro Markets Pass U.S.

BY RICHARD WILNER

Attempts to overturn portions of Sarbanes-Oxley may pick up steam this week after an April 4 report showed the value of European stock markets has overtaken U.S. markets for the first time since World War I. The seismic shift in the value of equity markets is a further blow to the New York Stock Exchange and other U.S. markets, which have seen some of the larger initial public offerings opt for overseas markets instead of their traditional NYSE home.

Ore. senator faces tricky path to re-election

BY Brad Cain

National Democrats have made it plain that one of their top targets in the 2008 Senate election will be Oregon Republican Sen. Gordon Smith, who's been reaching out more to moderate voters of late. But Smith could also face potential trouble within his own party at home. There are rumors that Smith might draw a primary challenge from the party's right wing. A national group that promotes fiscal conservatism is making noises about possibly bankrolling such an effort.

White House Posts FY 05 Earmarks Online

BY

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) today added "13,496 earmarks totaling more than $19 billion for Fiscal Year 2005 appropriations" to its online database. The site can be viewed at http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/earmarks/index.html. This is another important step forward in the effort to document, highlight, and eventually end the abuse and outright corruption in the appropriations process. It's a cool set up-- you can see the earmarks by state and program. Let the sun shine in!
