No Neutral Ground With Net Neutrality

From a formal Senate hearing to backroom intrigue in the House to political theater starring musician Moby, the issue of network neutrality swirled around Capitol Hill today. As cable industry spokesman Kyle McSlarrow said, "This [net neutrality] is now the number one issue." Proponents of net neutrality want Congress to enact legislation prohibiting broadband providers such as Verizon, AT&T and Comcast from charging content providers based on bandwidth consumption.

Musician Moby Raises Voice for Net Neutrality

Musician-turned-cafe-proprieter Moby turned up on Capitol Hill on Thursday to urge passage of a proposal by Massachusetts Democrat Edward Markey that would write Net neutrality principles into law. Sporting his signature dark-rimmed glasses, with his head clean-shaven as usual, the artist said that a world without legally binding Net neutrality principles would mean that today's "egalitarian" Internet would be privatized by large telecommunications companies.

Markey Supports Gov Regulation of the Net

Congressman Ed Markey plans to introdudce legislation codifying net neutrality regulations into law in an attempt to save the internet by promoting "openness" and "non-discrimination." The idea here is to grant users of the internet what is entitled to them by the FCC: The FCC statement says, "consumers are entitled" (our emphasis) to the "content," "applications" and "devices" of their choice on the Internet. They are also "entitled to competition among network providers, application and service providers, and content providers." But all that Rep.

Florida Legislature Passes Strong Eminent Domain Protections!

It's a good month for property owners! This week, Governor Jeb Bush signed House Joint Resolution 1567, which passed the State Senate by a margin of 37-3. It passed unanimously by 113-0 in the House. The resolution would prevent municipal governments from seizing private property and redistributing it to other private parties.

Rally Calls on Navy to Abandon Site for Proposed Landing Strip

Seeking to shoot down the Navy's plans for an airstrip in eastern North Carolina, hundreds of people gathered in front of the state capitol Tuesday to urge state and national lawmakers to put an end to the project. The Navy's proposed air field would cover 30,000 acres across rural Washington and Beaufort counties, giving pilots a runway to practice difficult aircraft carrier landings.
