Live From The 7th Congressional Convention

BY Martin Andrade

Already I have failed at my primary task for the Convention, which was to get Glen Menze to sign the FreedomWorks Earmarks pledge. Oh, I confronted Mr. Menze and he agreed to sign the pledge but... I didn't have a pen. I had a pen with me to start the day.

Campaign Rhetoric Continues to be Nothing But Talk

(Concord) Jennifer Horn today claimed to have pledged to forego earmarks and oppose tax increases from “Day One”, but a check of the list of signers of both the No Earmarks Pledge and Taxpayer Protection Pledge show that Horn has not yet taken either. Horn made the assertions at a Concord Candidates’ Forum sponsored by the Blue and Gold Star Mothers of New Hampshire. Hillsboro Republican Grant Bosse is the only candidate in the Second District to take both the Freedom Works “No Earmarks Pledge” and the Americans for Tax Reform “Taxpayer Protection Pledge”.

Will Hillary or Obama get serious about retirement security?

As the Democratic Presidential Primary winds down in Pennsylvania, to no surprise, neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama has provided the voters of Pennsylvania with a real proposal for saving Social Security.

North Carolina FreedomWorks Meets in Marion

Marion, North Carolina.  On April 15th, 25 FreedomWorks activists gathered for a tax and legislative update from Becki Gray with the Locke Foundation.  Becki updated the group on their tax burden in McDowell County and from the state of North Carolina.  She also stressed how property rights are constatntly under attack in North Carolina.  The latest is the state's proposal to put water meters on private wells to monitor water use.  Forced annexation was mentioned as a hot issue now in the capital.  How change was finally was in the wind.

Opposing the Land Transfer Tax in North Carolina

West Jefferson, North Carolina.  On April 14th, 20 area FreedomWorks activists and business leaders met to hear why Ashe County does not need a 200% Land Transfer Tax increase.  Chad Adams from the Locke Foundation questioned as to why they need a tax increase when the county has a 23% fund balance and stands to receive $10 million of "hold harmleass" over the next 10 years from Medicaid.

What Legacy?

I'm in the American Spectator this morning with a piece speculating on the motivations behind Bush's global warming speech yesterday. One thing I didn't note was that McCain's people are probably frustrated by this. While Bush didn't go all the way in endorsing cap and trade, as McCain has, he did substantially moderate his position on the issue, meaning it will be even tougher for McCain to differentiate himself from the current administration.

No Limits: Senator Dodd to Push Fed on Student Loans

BY

Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, yesterday said he will pressure the Federal Reserve to intervene in student loan markets. Dodd announced his intention to send letters in the coming days asking Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke to use existing tools to avert a breakdown in the market for student loans... The Wall Street Journal reports Sen.
