For many voters, final decision a matter of trust

BY Matt Cooper and David Steves

One of the old saws about politicians goes like this: "Question: How do you know when a politician is lying?" "Answer: His lips are moving." Voter trust - or lack thereof - is a recurring backdrop for many local and state ballot measures in the Nov. 7 general election.

Spending-limit campaigns spend time, money on ballot battle

BY BRAD CAIN

A coalition representing unions, education boosters and business groups is launching a get-out-the-vote effort to persuade Oregonians to reject measures on the Nov. 7 ballot to limit state spending and reduce state income taxes. Organizers say the effort against the Measure 48 spending limit and the Measure 41 tax cut features activists going door-to-door and working phone banks, urging opposition to measures they say would damage state services and "move Oregon backward."

GDP Falls, the Left Attacks?

This piece originally appeared in the National Review Online. The Commerce Department reported today that real economic growth declined from 2.6 percent in the second quarter to 1.6 percent in the third quarter of 2006. The Democrats and the mainstream media will no doubt say this is firm evidence that President Bush’s tax-cutting policies are starting to fail and that it’s time for a new policy direction. Critics also might blame the Federal Reserve for waiting too long to end its cycle of interest-rate hikes.

Oregon spending limit draws out of state money

BY AP

Out-of-state groups associated with libertarian Howard Rich have spent more than $1 million to persuade voters to clamp a tough spending limit on government in Oregon, new spending reports show. Measure 48’s opponents, meanwhile, have raised twice that much to defeat the spending limit, much of it from some of Oregon’s largest unions, the reports showed. Among the other nine measures on the Nov. 7 ballot, the spendiest continues to be Measure 42, which would bar the use of credit ratings to set insurance rates.

American Capital Markets Falling Behind

BY

Thanks in large part to policy mismanagement by a shockingly illiterate Congress, American financial markets are losing their edge to global competitors.  U.S. tax policy is increasingly complicated, unstable, and short-term (our capital gains and dividend rates change every two years, for example).  America's tax policy is a disgraceful, corrupt mess that specifically punishes U.S. companies that have operations overseas.
