A winning strategy for the tea party movement in 2010
There is much discussion about how the tea party movement will do in the general election on November 2nd. I have been thinking about this for quite some time, and here are my brief thoughts on how the movement can successfully approach the elections.
- The movement must work to actually turn out its members and supporters to the polls. The active conservative base should be voting early, and prepare to work on Election Day at the polls, handing out literature or providing rides to voters.
- The movement must focus on winning over moderate and independent voters by appealing to them on the core principles that animate the tea party movement: fiscal responsibility and pro-growth economic policies. The conservative base needs to win over the critical swing voters with personal communication.
- The movement must spend its time on offense, talking to voters about the failed economic policies of those in power. Don't get distracted by personal attacks or other issues that are not important. We should point to the unemployment numbers, the $13 trillion national debt, the $1.4 trillion annual deficits and the big government schemes that will only make our fiscal situation worse.
- The movement should focus like a laser on the key states and districts where there are close races that can be impacted by a final grassroots push during the last couple weeks of the election. Don't spend too much time focusing on lost causes like trying to defeat Nancy Pelosi. Let's put our scarce resources where they can make the biggest impact, in the key battleground senate races and house races, in states like Florida, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Ohio, Washington, Kentucky, Colorado, West Virginia, Wisconsin and California.
If the tea party movement gets organized locally to do the neighborhood walks, the literature drops, the yard sign blitzes and the phone calls between now and Election Day, we will be very successful in making sure that big government politicians pay for their sins at the polls.
It's up to all of us to have a good strategy to Take America Back on Nov. 2nd. From what I've seen traveling around the country these past couple of years, I'm confident that we are ready, willing and able to do just that.
