While campaigning for governor in 2010, Tom Corbett promised to "improve education…by including more options like charter schools, school vouchers and increased use of the education improvement tax credit program."

Today, Gov. Corbett reiterated that commitment to educational freedom at a press conference in York. The governor listed his priorities for a forthcoming legislative package as: a state commission to approve charter schools, increasing the earned income tax credit program, setting up "opportunity scholarships" for low income students in poorly performing schools and implementing a new teacher evaluation system.

FreedomWorks and our allies in Pennsylvania are grateful for the governor's support on this crucial issue and look forward to his leadership during the fall legislative session. The fact that the governor was joined in York by members of the State Senate and House of Representatives gives us hope that the time for genuine school choice may finally have come in Pennsylvania.

Since this school choice battle began last January, FreedomWorks has hosted dozens of panels, town hall meetings, rallies and activist training seminars, launched a statewide radio campaign and organized phone call and letter-writing campaigns through our statewide activist network of more than 30,000 Pennsylvanians.

In addition,10,000 letters have been sent by concerned residents to key Republican state legislators. In all, FreedomWorks has directly reached out to more than 100,000 voters in the Keystone state, urging them to contact their state legislators to tell them, "My school, my choice."

Pennsylvanians have waited too long for an educational system that empowers parents and students rather than bureaucrats and teachers' unions. They're ready for choice. That's why they elected Tom Corbett.
