Open Letter to President Obama on the Debt Ceiling Debate

By Matt Kibbe on July 20, 2011

Dear President Obama,

As you are likely well aware, you and I have many fundamental philosophical differences. I have long believed in personal liberty and economic freedom. Despite the rhetoric that you may espouse, your actions imply that you believe government can plan our lives better than we can plan them ourselves. Nearly all of the policies you have championed throughout your political career were designed to destroy individual freedom. With all due respect President, your big government philosophy is the antithesis of everything our Founding Fathers stood for.

Over the past few years, we have seen a spontaneous uprising of citizen activists protesting big government and reckless spending. My organization FreedomWorks (formerly known as Citizens for a Sound Economy) has never seen so many passionate activists in our 27 year history.  As you stated in a September 2010 Rolling Stone interview, “Dick Armey and FreedomWorks, which was one of the first organizational mechanisms to bring Tea Party folks together...” We believe that the Tea Party is a direct response to the out of control spending habits of Former President George W. Bush and you.

FreedomWorks has fought your numerous power grabs at every turn. Our over one million members stood strong against the failed $814 billion “stimulus” package, your 2,801 page healthcare takeover law and the Dodd-Frank Act (also known as the “Federal Reserve Empowerment Act”). We’re exhausted from these grueling battles but we will never give up. As you already know, the Tea Party has begun to change the debate in Washington, D.C. Liberty is always worth fighting for.

The federal government has hit the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling under your watch. It’s closer to $144 trillion with unfunded liabilities factored in. You often assert that you inherited massive debt from your predecessor. Now I’ll be the first to agree that George W. Bush was a big spending Republican. Both Democrats and Republicans are responsible for our current fiscal mess. When you took office two and a half years ago, the national debt stood at $10.6 trillion. It’s now over $14.3 trillion. That’s a 35 percent increase, Mr. President.

You remain committed to raising the debt ceiling. It’s unfortunate that you have announced your intentions to veto the Cut, Cap and Balance Act if it landed on your desk. The bill would cut $111 billion from the federal budget, place enforceable caps on spending and require the passage of a Balanced Budget Amendment. It’s a step in the right direction to get spending under control. How much further are you willing to raise the debt ceiling, Mr. President? Enough is enough.

We’d like a mature discussion on how to significantly reduce the national debt. So far, you have only offered $2 billion in phony cuts. Let’s put that number into perspective. The federal government borrows $4 billion every single day and our federal budget is a whopping $3.73 trillion. Your so-called solution is to cut 5 hundredths of one percent from the budget. We must do better.

I urge you to stop your scare tactics. “Armageddon” will not occur on August 2nd. The federal government still has plenty of money to ensure that our bond holders are paid in full even if we do not raise the debt ceiling. Your threat to withhold Social Security checks if we don’t raise the ceiling is merely a dirty political trick. Social security checks will still go out as usual. The federal government is predicted to take in between $170 to $200 billion in August (we will spend closer to $300 billion) but Social Security checks only cost $50 billion. The American people deserve to hear the truth.

We need a principled leader. You were opposed to raising the debt ceiling before you were for it. On March 20, 2006, Senator Obama said “the fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure…Leadership means the ‘buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of children and grandchildren.” I agree 100 percent with your statement. Stand by your convictions, Mr. President.

Where’s your plan? A “clean” debt ceiling hike will only make our fiscal mess worse. It’s time to change Washington’s spending habits once and for all. The debt clock is ticking and we cannot afford to kick the can down the road any longer.

Sincerely,

Matt Kibbe

Peter StromRemarkably well said. In my 72 years, I have never been more concerned about the direction of our Liberal government toward Socialism. By advocating more government control of our lives (ie: Obamacare) and disruption of our economy, it is apparent to me and many of us in the Tea Party, that President Obama's and his Liberal supporters do not understand the Constitution nor do they support it's principles. Keep up the fight. We in the Tea Party will continue to support the principles of better government at all levels. Peter Strom

BarbareebobMrs. Howard I heard many conservative radio talk show commentators raising the issue of Bush' spending on prescription drug payments for seniors as well as the panic in 2008 over the economy with TARP, etc. Both parties have spent and spent like a drunken sailor to the point it must be stopped and stopped NOW! They are all too scared of losing their jobs to do the right thing. Can't they see we are all losing our jobs thanks to their lack of character and conviction.

Try another tactic. The Tea Party along with the vast majority of the American people opposed TARP and other debt increasing socialist programs.

SandyHow disheartening. Sigh. God must be manipulating things supernaturally because I don't think anyone could be as stupid naturally as the people in our country have become. How in the world could they not see who and what Obama was before he was elected? It was pretty obvious to me and I'm just a little ol' lady from Texas with a high school education. I couldn't close my mouth for an hour after hearing that 86% of the Jews voted for him! Hello! At the very least the man is a Muslim sympathizer if not flat out a Muslim, who, want to wipe the Jews off of the earth. Amazing. I just don't get it. What a bunch of wimps we have running this country. Republicans included. When is just one of the Republican candidates for President, just one, going to stop with this diplomatic crap and tell it like it is? I really get tired of hearing everybody say Obama is "inexperienced" or "misguided". The man knows exactly what he is doing. His agenda is to bring this country to its' knees and he's doing a bang up job. He has lied more than anyone I have ever seen in my life. Do any of the Republicans point that out or come right out and call him a liar? NO! That wouldn't be "diplomatic". Diplomacy and political correctness are going to be the end of us. Somebody had better step up to the plate and give to Obama what he dishes out. His campaign for re-election will be the most negative this country has ever seen. He knows no limits when it comes to his goals. If someone doesn't step up, we are doomed. Is there anyone out there? Hello?

If we don't keep contacting elected representatives and senators and reminding them who sent them there and who can vote them out, we will regret it in 2012 with more of the same ole same ole. God help us. PRAY for our nation with all the conviction Obama has against our nation!

Steve CroftSandy… We must come from different planets for your views are as alien to me as any I have ever read. I sit over here an Iraq watching the debate and rhetoric and wonder if the freedom that we are defending is the same freedom you espouse? I do not think it is. The beauty of our nation lies in you and I having the right to our differences. I’m just astounded by your comments for I know they are not based on ignorance and sad that their intent is to inflame and incite for you obviously do care not about truth or justice or the values upon which this nation was founded. You prefer to use deceit and play on the fears and prejudices of the ignorant. You attempt to twist the courage and compassion of Obama into something foul and evil, why? You fear change. And yet change is the only thing that will save us. Our old ways are doomed. Your fear all the great notions of diversity and tolerance as you see your lily white world wilt. Set aside your prejudices and hatreds and work to build a nation that celebrates compassion for those in need and honors those who take steps to be good stewards of our Earth. We can do this sensibly and it has nothing to do with a balanced budget, but most certainly does imply that we need a balanced agenda that takes into consideration more than just our nations vested interests.

Lynne RobertsSteve, you sound like Obama. The change we need is not the change Obama and the radical left in Congress are bringing. Obama is an 'anticolonialist' He believes the west is the cause of poverty and subversion in other countries and his aim is to change America into like country. He does not like the Constitution. He said it is a document of 'negative rights'.....meaning it restricts the federal government. He does not like that. He wants the federal government to control everything. To make sure corporations and people operate in a fashion that will redistribute equally to all citizens .... which will make us all poor. He does not want America to be the strongest country because he believes ...... like his father that America must be diminished......and he is going about it. Spending excessively on purpose! D'nesh Desouze wrote and article on "How Obama thinks" on Forbes.com 9/27/2010. Read this article, it will illuminate you on what Obama is doing. Obama is wrong and if you love America as you say you do, challenge yourself and read the article.

Brenda RamosI completely agree with Sandy. As for Steve Croft's response, six or seven years ago I foound the DSA goals for America on the minutes of their National Convention in Chicage. Obama getting elected beat their projected goal for electing a zpredident by four years. I would suggest you start doing your homework. If you are a soldier, then you are probably better educated than the average American citizen. Use that edyucation and do some resaearch. Do as i did, check out who now funds our three major networks! Cheac out the history of the NEA and the Unions. Check out Obama's history. Read Saul Alinsky's "Rules for radicals." Go to the website of DSA, Moveon.org.. Look up the history of the "Shadow Party. That one is a no brainer. Jane Fonda, the fourth largest founding contributor is an open communist. Your reference to "lilly white??" tells leads me to assume you are black. Doesn't bother me if it don't bother you. So keep your racial prejudices out of it and do thisreseach yourself. Don't listen to what anyone has told you. Make up your own mind. Read abvout both sides. Look up the Democrats and Republicans history. Look up Dewey, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, FRanklin Roosevelt. The come back and repost and let us know who is uninformed. In case you have forgotten: I have given you specifics. Can you give me any. Since you are in Iraq, I assume you are a soldier. If you are, to whom did you swear allegience? 1.0] "I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Steve CroftBrenda, Moderation has gone out the window as has diplomacy, courtesy, and rational debate. The radical right is at war with the radical left and the middle class is caught in the middle. You mention the forces of the Radical-Left behind the Shadow Party but fail to mention or acknowledge that there are equally disturbing forces at work of the Radical-Right behind the Tea Party. I don’t think that I misread Sandy’s reply that implied that Obama is a Muslim “seeking to wipe the Jews of the earth”. She calls our President a liar and again implies that he is doing his best to bring our nation to its knees. I do not condone the Shadow Party any more that I can condone the Tea Party for they both have agendas that are self-serving and are not in the best interest of this nation. My complaint with Sandy’s post is that it is bigoted and without substance. In your post you mention the UCMJ. I’m not sure why? If anything my post is my feeble attempt to stand up for our Commander In Chief and the principles upon which this great nation that I love was founded. I sensed no honor, or duty to country, in Sandy’s post. I sensed hatred and fear and these will only lead us down the same roads of failure that have doomed cultures for centuries. We are a great nation and have the wherewithal to change the course of history. But it will take rational thought and participation by the middle-class to help us stay on course else the radical-right and left will gladly tear our nation to shreds fighting their ideological battles.

Nancy in NC's picture
Nancy MurdochSteve...it's sad to read that someone in the military does not understand the freedom you are fighting for. Freedom is to say what Sandy or you have said. Obama is your commander in chief, not the Messiah. It's not change we are afraid of...it's fundamental change. Do you know what the fundamentals of this country are? There are three branches of government, and both parties have abused the powers within those branches. Obama has executive ordered us to death. Look what the EPA is doing...if enacted those regulations will kill this country. Obama said that "energy prices will necessarily skyrocket". How long will Americans be able to live with gasoline at almost $4 a gallon and higher electric bills? How much higher will those food stamp rolls become? Who will pay the bills of this country? Your idea of compassion and mine are different. True compassion leaves people to live the lives without interference from a government intent on instituting socialism or communism. Too strong of words for you? All one has to do is look at history and see the path we are taking. We have deserted our decency and values for a softer, gentler way...the government way. Socialism works great until you have run out of other people's money...so said M. Thatcher. I think we are getting there. The President has stretched the truth to the breaking point on more than one occasion. He talked about members of his family serving in WWII...didn't happen. Also his mother did have insurance, even though he protrayed otherwise. He attended a church pastored by an antiSemite, America hating toad, but Obama didn't inhale. He has friends that are so unlike the people I know...Bill Ayers for example. George Soros has visited the WH on numerous occasions. You refuse to see his man as he is...in his own words. I pray to God that people in this country will wake up and stand up for the principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Greg ThompsonAnd soldiers blindly followed their leaders in the 3rd Reich (socialists) and other communist killing machines (killing people in the millions). "You attempt to twist the courage and compassion of Obama into something foul and evil, why? You fear change. And yet change is the only thing that will save us. Our old ways are doomed. Your fear all the great notions of diversity and tolerance as you see your lily white world..." Ah, undefined change is what Steve wants us to follow. No thanks. What courage and compassion? Taking money that belongs to a producer to give to a non-producer (called redistribution of wealth)? Socialist/communist idea that already is proven destructive to the country that attempts it. Our "old ways" are those of real compassion through free market, free thought, hard work and godly values. The new ways are to abolish godly values and declare god is dead, to take what one does not earn, to remove freedoms in the hopes of forcing the American people to "make" the "right" decisions. No thanks, if you must force someone to make the "right" decisions, it will fail regardless. Ah, you call someone else racist or fear monger while you use the same tactics. Why is it bad for someone else, but good for you? The middle class only survives under an open and free market system. Without godly values nothing is worth living for. I can't understand why the "new" is always considered better. I've traveled to many countries thanks to the DoD. Pick a better country. The problems we have is for not following the godly ways of our forefathers. Jesus Christ opposed slavery and oppression while supporting hard work. America was never perfect, but these "new" ways are not new but proven failures that attack the best parts of our heritage.

Steve CroftI assume that your are talking about our open and free market system, which when left to their own devices, has left in their wake tens of thousands of toxic waste sites across our nation. The same open and free market system, which when left to their own devices, pulled off the biggest robbery of all time. This same open and free market system that promotes unbridled consumerism with no regard to the impact to our biosphere. Why is it that when someone suggests that we be responsible stewards, that we have compassion for those in need, that we look to improve the quality of life for all peoples of all nations, that they are labeled socialists or communists? You speak of God, Christ, and godly values, and in the same breath you dehumanize those in need as non-producers. I too have traveled around the world. As a child of a career Navy man who survived the horror of Pearl Harbor and WWII in the Pacific, I traveled and meet and lived among many peoples of diverse cultures. It broadened my perspective. Here in Iraq I greet the Uganda guards we employ with a smile and they greet me by name. The Iraqi national that comes to help clean our area gives me a big hug every day and calls me Uncle, which is a show of respect. I raise these examples to only illustrate that in my many years of travel and in meeting with so many kind and wonderful people that I have found that when treated with kindness and respect, most people will reciprocate in kind. It is not the tale of Chicken Little crying the sky is falling when environmentalist and scientist provide factual evidence of the damage that the global ‘we’ are doing to this fragile planet. I have children and grandchildren whose future, in my minds eye, looks bleak and I am judged harshly for wanting to work hard to improve the quality of life for them? I am charged with being a socialist or a communist because I want to work with people around the world to address the myriad of issues that confront us.? I am considered less than a patriot if I am willing to compromise and accept that change is inevitable and necessary? I am an American. What does that imply? That I do not need to care? That I have a right to be arrogant? That I have a right to tread on the rights of others if it is in my best interest? If that is the criteria, then possible I am not a very good American.

Raymond Smith's picture
Raymond SmithAfter reading the exchanges, I really wonder if "Steve Croft" is really who he says he is, or is simply an operative for the left, trying to raise issues here to inflame and attack conservative and founding fathers values. He seems to have too much info and time for a soldier on duty in Iraq. In fact his messages have come in over a 10 hour period during the working day in Iraq. Is this what he does while on duty? How about a unit designation if he is for real. As to substance, none of the comments he makes are factually correct as to the conservative right abusing the rights he claims to be protecting. The reality is that he is protecting the values of the US Constitution, which is nothing like the abuse of same being conducted by the Obama administration. Tell me Mr. Croft, are the freedoms you are protecting the intimidation of voters at the polls by Black Panthers and the DOJ refusing to prosecute that because they are black not white? Are the freedoms you protect the authority of the government to force you to be a product from a private vendor (Obamacare)? Are the freedoms you want to protect the change from our Constitutionally based systems of laws to Sharia law. Is what you have seen in Iraq (if you are really there) what you want for America. You are correct that both sides have made mistakes. That is why the Tea Party came together to recall the nation to the values of the founding fathers. Sure there are those who are too radical on both sides, but unfortunately for America, they were lied to about the political philosophy of Barack Obama and tricked into electing him. His apparent agenda, based on his actions is to diminish America as a world power, take control over the citizens lives by growing government and its control through regulation (since he cannot get his radical agenda in place through legislation). He is driven by Alinsky values which are antithetical to our Constitutional standards. It is not the Tea Party or the conservatives which have led this changes, it is foreign money like Soros, and other leftwing puppet masters pulling the strings on hapless dupes like Pelosi, Reid, and others. If the media were giving a fair evaluation to the Obama presidency the public would be more outraged if they had before them the lies, tricks, abuses of power, and conspicuous consumption of taxpayers dollars while living like nuveau lottery winners. I want a real leader. Some one who is a grown up and doesn't have to hold "beer summits" when he misspeaks, but can simple admit a mistake and step up and lead.

Steve CroftFirst... I am in Iraq and I did not mean to imply that I am currently active military over here. I do support our troops and am honored and proud to be doing so. I did serve in the Navy during the Viet Nam war, but was spared having to go their. I am not a agent of the left and was drawn to the Tea Party because I agree we need a balanced budget. I am not enamored with Obama's performance as president but I am unwilling to surrender everything that I Iove about our nation for the sake of a balanced budget for as I read and listen to the rhetoric on these posts, such as Sandy's and those that agree with what to me is bigotry, then I guess the Tea Party isn't the right party for me . I am not an operative for the right or the left... I am an operative for a better future for my children and grandchildren. I'm not suggesting that anyone forsake their beliefs but I do question those who are so blinded by their beliefs that they forsake others. Do you think the trend toward corporatocracy is the answer? Do you feel that by isolating ourselves from the rest of the world that we can end all of our woes? Do we want to go to war with China as the world resources diminish and the worlds population continues to grow? I am just confused by the sense of anger fear and hatred that comes across these posts. I wish you well and although I don't think that Tea Party is for me I do hope that we make sane decisions regarding our debt and addressing the need to balance the budget.

Greg ThompsonSocialism and Communism proved themselves failures. If you want this country to continue to fund every nice sounding adventure, then expect this country to fail as well. The Tea Party may not be for you. It is easy to pick and choose some failings of economic freedom that the "old" America allowed. However, communism and socialism has not brought good environmental policy to their people. You say you've met many other nationalities. Again I ask, which country do you want to live in? It is true, for a time, that injustice prevailed. Yet, each of these injustices you bring up were eventually overcome. In fact, if you have a specific cause, I bet many Tea Party minded people would gladly help. Yet, you want to totally transform our system. The left, including Obama, Reid and Pelosi continue to incremental changes instead of selling their ideas wholesale to the American people. They lie to us because they know that Americans do not want government taking over private industry. We know where that takes us, it is not a "NEW" idea. If you are a communist, take ownership of it and say what is good about it. If you believe in government making better choices than the American people, then you are a socialist or communist. Do you think that you are the only one to hug a person from another country? Are you the only one with relatives that fought bravely for America? I am glad you are willing to work hard, so are others. Are you the only one to care for the needy? Why is government the only entity that can? Private sector assistance usually adds an extra element that government cannot, the personal touch (that you profess to care about). In the overall scheme of things, what you want to take place cannot happen through government. It is only through the individual that real change takes place. Governments are made up of people, the same as the private sector. Governments fail and make the same mistakes you claim only free markets make. That is a fallacy. The free markets cannot happen without freedom for the individual. The reverse is also true. Government run markets must crush freedom in order make their way work. In history, governments destroyed more lives and kept failing systems in place much longer or institutionalized failure much more than the private sector is capable of doing. What you say you want is for a better life. Again I ask, pick a better country.

Timothy SarsfieldI noticed that someone said that the DEBT went up by 200 percent under W. That is not true. It went up by 85 percent. I am not saying that is good. I simply note that 200 percent is inaacurate. I'd also note that the 85 percent was over 8 years. UnderAlso a large chunk of his debt accrued after the Democrats took both the House and the Senate. President Obama the debt has gone up 35 percent in a little over 2 years. So he is on pace to increase the debt by close to 140 percent if he serves two terms. My guess is that if left to his own devices he would match W.'s increase in a single term. For the record--if your a Democrat--the debt went up by 35 percent under Clinton during his 8 years. So President Obama has swamped him

SandyTo Steve Croft...I respect your right to your opinion. Obviously you do not afford me the same courtesy. I am NOT "lily while" as you put it but that is not the issue. I am not perfect but at least I have common sense which you are severely lacking. Your post proves what the Bible says, the more educated a person is the more stupid they become because they lose their common sense. Throwing insults at me is not going to change anything. Under Obama's reign we will indeed become a third world country. Get back to me when you or you children (if you have any) cannot afford to buy the essentials anymore. At that time you will learn a very hard lesson. That I was right. As I said I respect your right to your opinion. But, you are wrong. As others have said, socialism has NOT worked in ANY country it has been tried in. Look at Greece, Spain, Ireland and others. We have learned NOTHING from history. Of course they are not teaching correct history any longer. Government is not the vessel for taking care of the poor. That is supposed to be an individual endeavor. I know several people who have been on welfare all of their lives. What kind of incentive does that give one to work hard and take care of themselves and their families. If things are so good over here, why are you working in Iraq? Come on back home and see if you can get a job. At least 16 million people cannot and that doesn't even count the millions that have quit looking due to frustration. I am not a Republican. I am certainly not a Democrat who are thrilled at the legal murder of little babies and would never vote for one of them for that reason. I think they all suck and we need to clean house and start all over. You can live in your fantasy world if you want to but I prefer to live in reality.
