Co-sponsor Informed Taxpayers’ Federal Government Annual Reporting Act of 2010

Dear Representative,

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to co-sponsor Rep. McCarthy’s (R-CA) Informed Taxpayers’ Federal Government Annual Reporting Act of 2010. This is an important step toward increasing transparency and openness in government. In a democracy, it is essential that taxpayers be granted easy access to critical information including federal tax revenue, outlays, deficits, and public debt, which this bill helps provide.

As you all know, the national debt is currently over $12.5 trillion and continues to spiral out of control. Since September of 2007, the national debt has increased an average of $4.04 billion per day. Each citizen’s share of this debt is an overwhelming $41,129.86. According to CBO economic and budget outlooks, spending levels are set to rapidly increase along with massive tax raises in the coming years. These trends are unsustainable and threaten our future quality of life.

It is urgent that we tame this spiraling federal deficit. In a recent study by the Pew Research Center, 60% of Americans polled claimed that reducing the budget deficit should be a top priority for the President and Congress. The excessive spending in Washington has lead to the mortgaging of our nation’s future and will ultimately result in increased taxes, high inflation and stagnant wages. Taxpayers are rightfully concerned about federal spending and taxation. This vital information should not be hidden from them.

As Thomas Jefferson said, “Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirits at the dawn of day.” Citizens must be kept well-informed of the current federal government’s finances. This information should be conveyed to taxpayers in a simple and easy format.  This bill would require that this information be placed in IRS tax form instruction booklets and on the IRS homepage. A vote against this bill should be deemed a vote for government secrecy.  The people deserve to know how much their representatives have committed them to paying.

The Informed Taxpayers’ Federal Government Annual Reporting Act of 2010 demonstrates a commitment to governmental accountability and transparency. Americans want a fiscally responsible government. This act will make it easier for everyone to hold their representatives in government accountable to such standards. On FreedomWorks’ members behalf, I encourage all representatives to co-sponsor Rep. McCarthy’s The Informed Taxpayers’ Federal Government Annual Reporting Act of 2010 in order to grant all taxpayers accessible information on the federal government’s finances.

Sincerely,

Matt Kibbe
President and CEO
