Alabama Tax Fact Number 2: Try Cutting Spending First!

The supporters of the largest tax increase in Alabama state history continue to claim Alabama’s problems are unique. That’s wrong.

Almost every state is suffering budget problems this year. The National Council of State Legislatures issued a report July 23rd that documents the budget difficulties of all of the states. The NCSL report, however, documents what 31 states are doing and what Alabama and the supporters of the tax increase have not done – cut spending. The report states: “Because most states have enacted FY 2004 budgets, they already have taken action to close gaps. Measures from the 43 reporting states include:

  • Cutting spending (31 states)
  • Tapping a variety of state funds (29 states)
  • Reducing the workforce or taking other actions affecting state employees (23 states)
  • Tapping rainy day funds (13 states)
  • Using tobacco settlement funds (eight states)”
  • Shouldn’t we ask the politicians in Montgomery to cut spending before they ask the voters to approve the largest tax increase in state history?

On September 9th, vote NO on the largest tax increase in Alabama history.
