Asking State Legislators For Less

On June 20, several Orange County residents and I visited the state Legislature. We were part of the grass-roots group Citizens for a Sound Economy. Our slogan of the day was “We Want Less,” and our legislators – Sen. Howard Lee, Sen. Ellie Kinnaird, Rep. Verla Insko and Rep. Joe Hackney – were surprised that we weren’t coming to ask for more money from state government! Instead, we shared the philosophy of Citizens for a Sound Economy that what we really want is less – less taxes, less government regulation and less restrictions on the freedoms guaranteed to us by our Constitution.

We delivered to each of our representative a pledge not to increase taxes, and although we did not walk away with any signed pledges, we were treated with interest and respect by all of our representatives. Prior to our visits with our senators and representatives, we heard from former Sen. Lauch Faircloth on the benefits of letting legislators know our opinions.

We would like to thank the Citizens for a Sound Economy for sponsoring the event. For more information on this organization, please go to www.cse.org.
