WASHINGTON — The Bush-Cheney campaign yesterday began airing a new ad accusing Sen. John Kerry of "playing politics with national security" by criticizing the Patriot Act, a law intended to help fight terrorism.

Kerry has said he continues to support many elements of the law, but he's been highly critical of the Justice Department's implementation of it. He has called for changes he said would help avoid abuses.

The ad, which is airing in Washington and 17 other battleground states, incorrectly suggests that only liberals have problems with the law.

Some Republicans who voted for it also have expressed misgivings, including former House Majority Leader Dick Armey.
