CBO to Millions of Americans: If you like the coverage you have, you can't keep it

    12/09/2009

On July 21st, President Obama made a promise to the American people.  In a televised speech, the president gave us his word:

If you like your current plan, you will be able to keep it.  Let me repeat that:  If you like your plan, you'll be able to keep it.

Now, however, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has revealed data that suggests that Mr. Obama may be unable to keep his promise.  In a report released on December 7th, the CBO found that under the Senate bill millions of Americans will lose the health insurance that they currently possess.

We estimate that between 9 million and 10 million other people who would be covered by an employment-based plan under current law would not have an offer of such coverage under the proposal.

    Let me repeat that:

We estimate that between 9 million and 10 million other people who would be covered by an employment-based plan under current law would not have an offer of such coverage under the proposal.

If the reform plans being considered by Congress force millions of Americans out of the insurance that they currently enjoy, then President Obama should stay true to his word and veto such bills.  By ignoring his promise and supporting a bill that strips 10 million citizens of healthcare coverage, Mr. Obama reveals his intension to pass any reform rather than the real reforms that the American public deserves.
