Washington, DC – FreedomWorks is committed to organizing and training citizens to be active participants in opposition to a government takeover of health care. Building on tea party momentum, FreedomWorks is mobilizing its national grassroots network to attend town halls, visit congressional district offices, and participate in public forums during the August congressional recess. Given the importance of the issues at stake, FreedomWorks supports a vigorous, respectful and open debate.
It’s obvious the administration and congress are feeling the heat, but advocates of nationalized health care would like you to believe otherwise. As the health care debate moves form rhetoric to reality, Americans do not like what they see.
Poll numbers across the board show the president’s proposal growing increasingly unpopular. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) and administration are attempting to discredit genuine opposition to the Obama plan by telling Congress to disregard opposition as ‘fake’ and ‘manufactured.’
When asked about the nationwide, town hall protests, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs compared the protesters with the “Brooks Brothers Brigade. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D, CA), was asked by a reporter Wednesday, “Do you think there’s a legitimate grassroots movement going on here?” The speaker’s retort: “I think they’re AstroTurf.”
The latest Rasmussen polls show that 68 percent of voters have health-insurance coverage they rate as good or excellent. A strong 74 percent of voters also rate the quality of care they now receive as good or excellent, while 53 percent of those polled believe ‘ObamaCare’ will increase costs. Rasmussen polling back in February showed that by a “2-1 margin, voters believe that no matter how bad things are Congress can always make matters worse.” Finally, 41 percent are strongly opposed to the current bills on the table, while only 25 percent said they strongly favor President Obama’s plans for health care reform.
Americans are rightly concerned that the proposed public option or co-op approaches as proposed will be a Trojan Horse for the eventual elimination of private health insurance.
FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe observed: “When the political left brings activists together, it’s called community organization. When conservatives do it, it’s called thugery. We encourage our members to know the facts, be polite, and get to the microphone to make their voices heard in opposition. We need reforms that lower costs and increase the number of insured, like Rep. John Shadegg’s proposed legislation that would enable consumers to buy health insurance across state lines and tort reform that would reign in lawsuit abuse. These policies could lower costs today.”
Added FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey: “I’m proud to see these folks attending town halls in the defense of freedom and advocating free market reform. No one at FreedomWorks supports the disruption of town hall events for disruption’s-sake. I know that the left has mastered the tactic, but we have never believed it to be appropriate of effective. That said, I understand the real frustration grassroots Americans are felling about the closed, rushed legislative panic that is supposed to produce good health care reform. The fact is that the American people are rejecting both the dishonest process and the principles behind the Democrats trillion dollar takeover of health care. Those supporting a hostile takeover of health care are trying to do damage control and are looking for a scapegoat.
