Citizens for a Sound Economy Applauds President’s Call for Additional Tax Relief

Recently, President George W. Bush called on Congress to enact pro-growth economic policies that would jump-start the economy.

In response to the president’s remarks urging Congress to act, Citizens for a Sound Economy’s president, Paul Beckner, issued the following statement:

“The president made a timely and appropriate proposal to address the nation’s economic slowdown. By calling for additional pro-growth and pro-investment tax cuts the president shows that he understands that economic recovery will only come from the entrepreneurial spirit of the private sector. Additional government spending is likely needed to fight terrorism, but it will not revive our economy.

“In the wake of the terrorist attacks, CSE has advocated a four-part economic recovery plan: pro-growth tax relief, a sound energy policy, deregulation in key sectors of the economy, and fiscal restraint. We are pleased that we are in agreement with the president on the importance of tax relief for working Americans and businesses.

“The President’s call for an acceleration of the tax cuts passed earlier this year, for additional tax cuts for low and moderate income workers, for accelerated depreciation and repeal of the corporate Alternative Minimum Tax are all consistent with CSE’s economic growth agenda. Congress should move swiftly to enact these common sense provisions to get our economy jump started so that we can properly support the war effort, begin our economic recovery, and create new jobs to get those who were laid off working again.”
