CSE Makes a Splash at Social Security Field Hearing

On Monday, January 26th, CSE took part in a field hearing by the Subcommittee on Social Security in Boca Raton, Florida. This event was held at Florida Atlantic University and was presented by the Chairman of the Social Security Subcommittee, Congressman Clay Shaw.

Various interest groups were also represented and testified as to the problems with the current system including a representative from the Florida Alliance for Retired Americans, who spoke out in opposition to any reforms that would increase individual ownership and instead only advocated raising the cap on taxable income to fund the system.

CSE was in fact the only group present that advocated for Social Security reform with Personal Retirement Accounts (PRA’s) providing individuals with ownership over their own retirements.

South Florida CSE Director John Hallman was on hand and distributed Social Security reform literature and stickers touting the PRA message. In addition, Hallman was able to personally speak to both Shaw and Deputy Commissioner of Social Security James B. Lockhart concerning the benefits of PRA’s in order to save the system.

Commissioner Lockhart, who is in support of some individual ownership as the only alternative to save Social Security, and Shaw, who has stated his support for a private accounts plan, said that they appreciated the presence of CSE in support of personal retirement accounts. Congressman Shaw and Deputy Commissioner Lockhart also said that CSE would play a vital role in educating citizens on the importance of reforming Social Security.
