CSE Members Just Say “NO” to 55 MPH

Texas CSE members have been actively pushing the EPA and TNRCC to use sound science. Air quality in Texas continues to improve, but the EPA continues to force higher standards, making compliance increasingly difficult and costly. Please weigh in even if you don’t live in the Houston area and are not now subject to the 55 MPH speed limits imposed (even the EPA admits now that there is no science that confirms the lower speed limit improves air quality!). More regulations and costly compliance measures are headed to your hometown. We are forwarding this email from one of our friends at YCT.

The TNRCC is set to issue its final ruling on the 55 mph speed limit in Harris County. County Attorney Mike Stafford will present the case for Harris County residents at the final TNRCC hearing this Wednesday, June 5, in Austin. The Executive Director of the TNRCC has indicated that public outcry has had significant influence on the Commission’s decision process. The TNRCC will likely consider rescinding the 55 mph restriction for autos and light trucks but keep it for heavy trucks. Trucking experts claim that states with lower truck speed limits have more rear-end collisions and that the proposal would result in more highway accidents.

It is not too late to weigh in with your opinion. Tell the TNRCC that the new speed limit puts an unnecessary burden on Texas drivers, with

little or no impact for better air quality.

Your help is needed – please call the TNRCC and say “no” to 55 mph and ask them to stand up to the EPA. Here are the contact numbers for the TNRCC, followed by a Houston Chronicle story on the hearing.
