Email Privacy Reform Should Not Be Controversial

06/09/2016

Following Sen. Mike Lee’s (R-Utah) withdrawal of the ECPA Amendments Act from the Senate Judiciary Committee, FreedomWorks CEO Adam Brandon commented:

“It’s disappointing that the important reforms contained in ECPA have been derailed by a handful of senators who are trying to use this vital legislation to undermine Americans’ privacy by expanding the FBI’s ability to access communications without a warrant.”

“The House overwhelmingly approved these reforms, 419-0, to modernize the Fourth Amendment. This should not be controversial; it’s unfortunate that these popular reforms have been jeopardized by those who are seeking to expand the reach of government rather than protect the constitutionally protected rights of all Americans. We hope Sen. Lee, who has been a champion for civil liberties, has the opportunity to work through these issues to enact meaningful privacy reforms.”
