FreedomWorks’ Statement on the Highway Bill

Following the House of Representatives’ passage of the $340 billion federal highway bill, which bails out the insolvent Highway Trust Fund and reauthorizes the crony Export-Import Bank, FreedomWorks CEO Adam Brandon commented:

“This business as usual for the House. The bill they passed today may please their pals on K Street, but it’s another sellout of taxpayers and a betrayal of the conservative grassroots. Every two years, Republicans run to their constituents and tell them how they’re fighting Barack Obama and reining the federal government, and yet they just passed another bill that’s a gift to Obama and throws more money at Highway Trust Fund without any reforms.”

“To make matters worse, this already bad bill brings the Export-Import Bank back from the dead. It’s another slap in the face to the conservative grassroots. The fundamental problem with most members, including many on the Republican side, is they don’t understand that what’s ‘best for business’ isn’t always best for taxpayers. The Export-Import Bank represents Washington’s corruption and cronyism. This relic of the New Deal should remain in the dustbin of history.”

On Wednesday, FreedomWorks issued a key vote “no” against the highway bill and its reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank. This vote will be included on our 2015 Congressional Scorecard.
