FreedomWorks Applauds Passage of Email Privacy Act in the House of Representatives

04/27/2016

Following the passage of the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699) in the House of Representatives, FreedomWorks CEO Adam Brandon commented:

“Most Americans would be shocked to learn that the federal government can access and read emails that are more than 180 days old. That’s because Congress hasn’t kept up with the rapid changes in technology. Sadly, Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures have suffered. Thankfully, the Email Privacy Act begins to restore this crucial freedom.”

“The Email Privacy Act upgrades current law to ensure that our electronic communications are protected from overreaching government agencies and bureaucrats. If any federal agency wants our emails, this bill would require them to get a warrant. This is a big victory for our community, and we hope the Senate will act quickly and send the Email Privacy Act to President Obama’s desk.”

FreedomWorks gathered nearly 28,000 petition signatures in support of the Email Privacy Act and its community of grassroots conservative activists sent 6,000 messages and made 1,200 calls in support of the bill.

On Tuesday, FreedomWorks released a key vote alert in support of the Email Privacy Act. FreedomWorks will count the vote on this bill as a key vote when calculating its Congressional Scorecard for 2016. The scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes members of Congress who consistently vote to support economic freedom and individual liberty.
