FreedomWorks Applauds President Trump’s Support for First Step Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following President Trump’s announcement of support for the First Step Act, Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:

“It’s fantastic that President Trump has come out in support of the First Step Act, a landmark piece of legislation that focuses on evidence-based policies already implemented in states like Georgia and Texas. These reforms have been met with success, saving money and continuing to lower crime rates in the process. The president’s support is crucial to seeing these reforms across the finish line.”

“FreedomWorks strongly supported the First Step Act as it worked through the House. The bill would bring crucial reforms to the federal prison system to reduce the rates of repeat offenders and enhance public safety.

“There is no denying that sentencing reform needs to be addressed. We have long supported sentencing reform and implementing modest, common-sense reforms in the federal system are long overdue. The First Step Act offers modest but crucial sentencing reforms.”

“Passing the First Step Act would be a win-win for conservatives. It reinforces the successes of states like Georgia and Texas, as well as many other states that have taken similar steps, and would affect positively affect real lives and communities the day it is enacted. We call on Leader McConnell to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. This bill will pass, and it will pass easily should Leader McConnell bring it to the floor.”
