FreedomWorks Calls Upon Elected Officials to Address $22 Trillion National Debt

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the report that the U.S. national debt has now surpassed $22 trillion, Adam Brandon, FreedomWorks President, commented:

“The national debt is the greatest existential threat to the United States today. By running such large annual deficits, we push ourselves closer and closer to a debt crisis, which would lead to a widespread financial collapse. It would devastate our economy and leave us unable to properly fund our national security needs. We simply cannot afford to maintain current levels of spending.

“Much fault lies with the 115th Congress’ refusal to properly address the burgeoning national debt. When Republicans had united control of the federal government, they failed to follow through on their promise of fiscal responsibility, on all fronts.

“The Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 blew through spending caps in a way that any so-called ‘fiscal conservative’ should be ashamed of. Moreover, ObamaCare remained intact and ballooning entitlement spending remained unaddressed. We need a serious conversation about fixing the budget process and reigning in federal spending, especially at a time when House Democrats are calling for expanding and creating programs that could potentially triple the size of the current federal budget.”
