FreedomWorks Echoes Sen. Sanders’ Admission of Socialism’s Failure in Venezuela

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to Sen. Bernie Sander’s (I-Vt.) comments this evening with regards to the ongoing situation in Venezuela, Jason Pye, FreedomWorks Vice President of Legislative Affairs, commented:

“We’re glad to see that Sen. Sanders has acknowledged that socialism has failed in Venezuela. Economic centralization and price controls have created inflation and shortages of food and medicine.

“Venezuela is a nation rich in natural resources beyond its oil wealth. It has a stable climate, fertile farmland, and is close to major international shipping lanes. Yet, even with all of these incredible endowments, it could not survive the hubris of central planners.

“So-called ‘democratic socialists’ may make promises for ‘free’ things provided by the government and attack producers in our economy, but Venezuela has shown that socialism brings misery and destroys opportunity and prosperity. Worst of all, socialism devalues the rights and humanity of the individual.”
