Washington, DC– FreedomWorks stood side-by-side today with MoveOn.org today to protest health insurance companies’ attempt to change health care reform from an attempt to bring choice and options to one focused on the use of force.  Central to all major health care reform bills circulating on the Hill is the “individual mandate,” which would force everyone in America to buy government-approved health insurance.

FreedomWorks believes the individual mandate is another form of corporate welfare that will give the big health insurance companies billions of taxpayer dollars.

The primary beneficiary of this mandate?  Big insurance companies—because the “reform” would force everyone to buy their product and would funnel billions of dollars to the insurers in the form of subsidies for the purchase of their product.

“It’s a dream come true for the big insurers, but a nightmare for the taxpayer.  The Baucus plan contains $463 billion in taxpayer subsidies over 10 years for insurance companies—that’s corporate welfare on a grand scale.  The individual mandate should be scraped.” said Matt Kibbe, FreedomWorks President and CEO.

“Of course big insurance loves the individual mandate.  Imagine how McDonalds would react if the government forced us to eat hamburgers everyday and then offered $463 billion in subsidies to make sure we did” said Max Pappas, FreedomWorks Vice President for Public Policy.

The protest took place outside the offices of America’s Health Insurance Plans (located at 601 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, South Building, in Washington) which stands to gain from the individual mandate.
