FreedomWorks North Carolina Defeats Tax Hikes Across the State

FreedomWorks North Carolina used grassroots politics and a targeted mail, email and phone campaign to defeat four proposed tax hikes on the ballot in Orange, Gates, Ashe and Tyrell counties Tuesday.

In the most liberal county in the state, Orange County, FreedomWorks was able to win a landslide 66 to 33 percent victory. Local activists led the campaign by organizing town hall meetings, handing out voter education cards and going door-to-door to tell voters to oppose the land transfer tax.

In Gates County, North Carolina FreedomWorks also crushed the proposed tax hike 70 to 29 percent. This was the second attempt by the county to raise the land transfer tax. FreedomWorks activists also led the effort in Ashe County, which saw the tax increase go down by 55 to 44 percent. In addition to the land transfer tax, FreedomWorks also beat back sales tax increases in 17 out of 18 counties where they were on the ballot.

After yesterday’s string of anti-tax victories North Carolina FreedomWorks is reinforcing its reputation as the state’s premier grassroots group fighting on behalf of taxpayers.

FreedomWorks Northeast Regional Director Allen Page commented,

“Our victories statewide show that politics still goes to those that show up. Our members showed up in a big way and were able to save the taxpayers millions of dollars through good old-fashioned shoe-leather politics. This is a big day for limited government conservatives in North Carolina.”
