FreedomWorks Opposes Massive New Taxpayer Funded Climate Plan

Washington, D.C.—Today, FreedomWorks announced its opposition to a new draft of a climate plan being championed by House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D, CA-30) and Energy and Environment Subcommittee Chairman Edward Markey (D, MA-7) that would explode the size of government and stick American taxpayers with the bill; estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars.

The centerpiece of the proposed legislation is a massive cap and trade carbon emissions program that will hit American businesses and consumers alike with significantly higher energy costs.  This backdoor cap and trade energy tax hike will not only hurt taxpayers’ wallets, but as it affects businesses’ bottom lines, it will threaten jobs as well.

While the draft plan remains in flux, the core of its policy backbone is so potentially devastating to taxpayers that FreedomWorks is already planning a major effort to educate and mobilize policymakers and consumers alike on the threat that it poses.  Specifically, the group plans to leverage its nationwide grassroots army of hundreds of thousands of grassroots activists for a host of activities including rallies, lobbying visits, and email and phone blitzes aimed at targeted legislators.

FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe commented, “The proposed Waxman/Markey climate plan announced today eerily mirrors certain provisions in President Obama’s budget.  Apparently to cater to their extreme environmental base, Democrats are willing to hit Americans with a massive new energy tax and threaten jobs even in the face of our current economic situation.  FreedomWorks will help lead the fight against their efforts and mobilize our grassroots army to hit targeted lawmakers in their districts and in Washington, D.C.”
