Our most recent round of endorsements has led some to accuse us of abandoning our bold, anti-establishment principles in favor of easy victories and low-risk candidates. It’s a baseless charge, which, as usual, displays an ignorance of how we operate and what we stand for.
FreedomWorks PAC is committed to supporting candidates who we have identified as potential members of the Freedom Caucus, who will stand up for the principles of limited government power that we all hold so dear. We also work to empower the grassroots and oppose candidates who are backed by big money special interests, such as K St. lobbyists and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
This year, our endorsements range from insurgent challengers like Matt Bevin, who is taking on one of the most experienced, well-funded establishment Republicans in Washington, to incumbents who have proven themselves to be principled defenders of liberty, like Justin Amash and Thomas Massie, and who have received exemplary ratings on the FreedomWorks Legislative Scorecard.
Some of these races represent the kind of steep uphill battles we have become known for, such as when we helped Ted Cruz overcome nigh impossible odds to win his seat in Texas. In others, the opposition is admittedly not so stiff, but that is no reason not to recognize those congressmen who have voted on the side of freedom again and again.
Being anti-establishment does not mean blindly opposing any incumbent. It would make little sense to abandon our most courageous freedom fighters simply because they won their elections last time around. As important as seeking out great, new candidates is making sure they stick around and continue to do the right thing once they get to Washington.
Instead, what we mean by taking on the establishment is holding our elected representatives’ feet to the fire to make sure they don’t give in to the corrupting influence of D.C. politics, that they keep their campaign promises, and that they continue to put the priorities of their constituents over those of lobbyists and special interests. This means taking on the Mitch McConnells, the Thad Cochrans and the Mike Simpsons of the Republican Party, as well as protecting our best lawmakers from Chamber-backed establishmentarians like Brian Ellis, challenging Amash. At the same time, we are working to oppose incumbent Democrats like Kay Hagan, Mark Pryor, and Mary Landrieu.
FreedomWorks PAC is, first and foremost, a grassroots service center for millions of activists who are tired of seeing their government consumed by corporate welfare, Wall St. bailouts, and an ever expanding bureaucracy indifferent to the Constitution, and the individual rights contained therein. We take our responsibility in this regard very seriously, and make every effort to be thorough and diligent in our endorsement process.
The fact that we now have a large number of sitting congressmen voting for freedom and facing limited opposition speaks volumes about the successes we are having in spreading the ideas of liberty. But these endorsements do not diminish the other competitive battles we have been involved in for months - battles like the Senate races in Kentucky and North Carolina, and house races in California, Idaho, and Alabama.
FreedomWorks PAC remains as fearless and principled as ever, and we’re not afraid to pick hard fights for candidates we believe in. We’re supporting Igor Birman in California’s 7th district, a former resident of the USSR whose firsthand knowledge of the dangers of big government would make him an invaluable addition to Congress. We’re supporting Dan Bongino in Maryland’s 6th District, an ex-secret service agent who is willing to lay down his life for the cause of freedom. These are amazing guys in very competitive elections, and we couldn’t be prouder to help them overcome the odds, just as we have done for so many others in the past.
Today, with the tools of technology and the help of organizations like FreedomWorks PAC, the grassroots has more power and influence than ever before. Our job is to help keep up that momentum, and make sure establishment politicians never rest easy in their seats. As Ted Cruz said in an interview with FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe, “Nothing scares elected officials more than hearing from their constituents, and in my view, liberty is never safer than when politicians are terrified.”
