FreedomWorks Statement on High-Risk Pool Amendment to the AHCA

FreedomWorks President Adam Brandon made the following comment on the progress with the American Health Care Act, H.R. 1628:

“Thursday’s Rules Committee meeting to approve an amendment spearheaded by Reps. Palmer and Schweikert to narrow the purpose of American Health Care Act's Patient and State Stability Fund for high-risk pools is a step in the right direction. We hope to see more progress to improve the American Health Care Act over the two-week recess.”

“However, House Republicans must tackle more of ObamaCare's Title I structure, which is driving up the cost of health insurance premiums. At the minimum, language must be included to give states flexibility on essential health benefits and community rating.”

"I'd also like to remind those in the conference, including members of the Tuesday Group, who are balking at any language to address these costly provisions have voted several times to fully repeal ObamaCare, including Title I or defund the law. Conservatives have already given up a lot of ground in these negotiations, but Republicans moderates, who voted to fully repeal ObamaCare as recently as January 2015, are now changing their tune. Frankly, that's hypocrisy."

The House of Representatives voted to pass H.R. 596 on January 28, 2015. The bill would have fully repealed ObamaCare, including Title I. H.R. 596 passed the House by a vote of 239 to 186. Most of the Tuesday Group voted for voted for the bill.
