FreedomWorks Statement in Response to House’s Passage of S. 24

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the House’s passage of S. 24, the Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019, Jason Pye, FreedomWorks Vice President of Legislative Affairs, commented:

“Just because a bill includes the phrase ‘Fair Treatment’ in its short title does not make it true. The passage of S. 24 by Congress will only make government shutdowns more likely. By effectively treating federal employee payrolls as mandatory spending, Congress will be less likely to balk at the prospect of a shutdown. At the same time, the deficit will continue to increase due to higher levels of mandatory spending.

“FreedomWorks applauds the courage of the few who voted against the measure yesterday, Reps. Amash, Biggs, Gosar, Grothman, Massie, Roy and Yoho. These seven conservatives understood the consequences of passing this bill and voted the fiscally responsible way by voting against it. S. 24 is no way to govern.”
