FreedomWorks Statement On Senate’s Failure to Pass Sen. Paul’s Amendment to H.R. 6147

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- In the wake of the Senate’s failure to pass Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) amendment #3543 to the Interior, Environment, Financial Services, and General Government Appropriations Act, H.R. 6147, Jason Pye, FreedomWorks Vice President of Legislative Affairs, commented:

“For the 25 Republicans who voted against Sen. Paul‘s amendment to reduce spending to fiscally responsible levels, we have two questions: We’re $21 trillion in debt — If now is not the time to cut spending, when is? What the hell are you waiting for? This amendment simply would have brought discretionary spending back in line with those levels authorized in the Budget Control Act, before Congress gleefully threw the caps ‘to the ash heaps of history,’ as Minority Leader Schumer gloated after the passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act earlier this year.”

“When the entire country knows that mandatory entitlement programs are the true drivers of our spending problem, it is absurd that half of the Republican conference in the Senate could not even bring themselves to support what would have amounted to just $17.5 billion less spending than will now be appropriated. The taxpayers will pay, literally out of their pockets, for this profligacy. Saying we’re disappointed in these senators would be a gross understatement.”
