FreedomWorks Urges Against Rash Action in Encryption Debate

03/01/2016

Following the introduction of legislation by House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) to establish the National Commission on Security and Technology Challenges, FreedomWorks Legislative Affairs Manager Josh Withrow commented:

“The fundamental trust that underlies all Internet communications and commerce is upheld by strong encryption – by the knowledge that our personal and financial data is safe from the reaches of those who would misuse it. There are some in Congress who would simply charge forward and undermine strong encryption in the name of national security, endangering online security, as well as America's leadership role in the global digital economy, in the process.”

“If Congress must reopen the encryption issue, the proposed McCaul-Warner commission appears to at least represent a smarter approach. It is encouraging that a strong national security advocate like Chairman McCaul appears to understand how vital it is to avoid rash action on a vital issue like encryption.”
