FreedomWorks Urges Arizona Lawmakers to Reform Civil Asset Forfeiture Laws

Following an informational hearing on civil asset forfeiture reform in the Arizona House Government and Higher Education Committee, FreedomWorks Director of Communications Jason Pye commented:

“Law enforcement needs tools like asset forfeiture to target those who perpetuate addiction and crime in communities. But there must be protections in place to ensure that due process is given and that the government is not permanently taking the property of innocent individuals.”

“Arizona’s current forfeiture laws lack meaningful protections for innocent property owners. The ideas presented to committee members today, including requiring the same evidentiary standard needed to secure a conviction, by our colleagues at the U.S. Justice Action Network and other organizations would restore the fundamental right of due process and protect private property, the cornerstone of liberty, in Arizona.”
