FreedomWorks Vermont to Rep. Sanders: Support Health Care Competition

Dear Congressman Sanders:

I am sure you are aware of the pain high health insurance costs are creating for too many Vermonters. Today, for example, the average Vermont family of four must pay $771 for a policy with a $2,000 deductible, 20% co-insurance – a price too many hard- working Vermonters cannot bear. However, if allowed to purchase heath insurance outside Vermont, that same family could buy the same policy for as little as $172 per month out of Kansas City, Missouri.

As I am sure you are also aware, the “Health Care Choice Act” (H.R. 2355) passed out of committee on July 23. This bill would make it possible for Vermonters and all Americans to shop for health insurance anywhere in the United States, and it is expected to reach the full House floor sometime in September.

By making it legal to purchase insurance across state lines, Vermonters would be able to enjoy immediate and dramatic results in our struggle to lower the cost of health care. In addition, the number of uninsured Vermonters would drop as more people would be able to find and afford high-quality, lower cost polices.

Just as you have led the fight to enable Vermonters to buy cheaper prescription drugs across national borders, now I hope you will fight to enable Vermonters and all Americans to buy cheaper health insurance across state borders. I urge you to not only vote for the “Health Care Choice Act” when it comes up on the floor, but also to use your influence between now and September to rally support for it among your fellow Representatives. As Vermont’s sole member of the House of Representatives, your participation and success in this fight is critical.

FreedomWorks-Vermont and its membership would welcome the chance to work with you in defeating the big insurance special interests who are lobbying fiercely to defeat the “Health Care Choice Act”. Their goal is to maintain the legal right to unfairly charge inflated prices to a captive markets such as Vermont. This is contrary to the health and financial interests of hard-working Vermonters, and we look forward to your help in correcting this injustice.

Respectfully,
