Groups to Push Tax, Budget Ideas in Raleigh

Residents seeking to send messages to the General Assembly on budget and tax changes have their pick of points of view this week.

Coalition 2001, a network of 47 social service and health care organizations, will gather today at the Legislative Building in Raleigh, talk with lawmakers and hold a news conference. The group opposes cuts to programs in mental health, substance abuse treatment and aid to people with developmental disabilities.

Some of the coalition’s member organizations have suggested increased taxes on cigarettes and alcohol to stave off cuts proposed because of the estimated $ 2 billion deficit in the next state budget.

The coalition can be reached at (919) 832-3787.

Alternately, Citizens for a Sound Economy will gather on Halifax Mall in Raleigh on Wednesday.

The “third annual CSE Day at the Capital” will feature meetings with lawmakers, a fried-chicken lunch and an ice-cream social. Registration costs $ 25.

CSE said it would urge lawmakers to oppose new taxes and proposals for a state lottery. Other issues to be discussed include changes to the municipal annexation law, litigation protection for public school teachers and the strengthening of private property rights.
