Key Vote NO on Another Clean Debt Ceiling Hike

As one of our millions of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your members of Congress and ask that they vote NO on any “clean” debt ceiling increase.

It is irresponsible to increase our national debt without also enacting serious spending reforms that put us on a credible path to a balanced budget. Even with last year’s massive tax hikes and tiny sequester cuts currently shrinking the deficit, the federal government is still projected to add another half trillion dollars to our $17 trillion national debt just this year alone, and within a few years we’ll be right back to running trillion dollar deficits all over again.  On our current course, the national debt will swell to an unfathomable $27 trillion in ten years. We are playing with fiscal fire, courting a debt-induced economic collapse. Just as a well-run bank must eventually refuse to increase the credit limit on a spending addict’s credit card, Congress must deny the federal government more credit until it agrees to a plan to balance its books.

One simple way to solve the current spending crisis is simply to stop increasing spending.  This isn’t rocket science, but Washington insiders seem to take for granted that our spending simply must increase each and every year.  Simply spending exactly what we’ve budgeted for this year – and not one dollar more – over the next few years would result in a balanced budget by 2017.

Stopping spending increases would take some real reforms – including changes to the “big three” entitlement programs (Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid).  No one ever said getting federal spending under control would be easy.  But the alternative is a deficit that we may find impossible to control without massive economic and financial disruptions for millions of Americans. We can no longer afford to kick the can down the road. The time to begin reigning in out-of-control spending is right now.

For these reasons, I urge you to call your representative and senators, and ask them to vote NO on a clean debt ceiling increase. We will count their vote as a KEY VOTE when calculating FreedomWorks’ Economic Freedom Scorecard for 2014. The Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of Congress who consistently vote to support economic freedom.

Sincerely,
