Key Vote ‘NO’ on the big government SCHIP bill

On behalf of nearly 850,000 FreedomWorks members nationwide, I write to urge you to VOTE NO on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) reauthorization bill up for a vote Tuesday. The bill exceeds the president’s already generous request by $30 billion dollars, and he is right to threaten a veto.

The passage of this massive package would be a giant step towards government control over the funding and direction of health care in this country. This bill would not only cover poor children, but would cover middle class adults and families that make as much as $80,000 per year.

Funding this assault on individual liberty and personal freedom with a 61 cent cigarette tax hike is also irresponsible. Cigarette taxes are regressive and are an unreliable source of revenue. Funding the SCHIP expansion would require 22 million new smokers over the next 10 years, according to Heritage Foundation.

It is time lawmakers in Washington put a stop to the wasteful expansion of government. FreedomWorks will count your vote as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard. The FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes Representatives who demonstrate voting records in support of economic freedom.

Sincerely,
