Key Vote to Support Rep. Price’s No Lame Duck Resolution

Dear Representative,

Following the November elections, there is a potential threat that the Democratic majority comprised of many defeated and retiring members could use a Lame Duck Session to pass legislation that could significantly expand government programs and burden consumers with more taxes and regulations.  It is strongly believed that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are delaying the vote on controversial pieces of legislation until after Election Day.

Polls show that the majority of Americans are opposed to much of the legislation being pushed by the Democratic leadership, including “stimulus” packages, cap and trade, card check and numerous other tax hikes. Attempts to use a Lame Duck Session to rush through costly new legislation would be yet another example of Democratic leadership passing partisan bills that infringe on individual liberty against the will of the people.

Thankfully, Republican Study Chairman Tom Price (R-Ga.) has introduced a resolution that would ensure that Congress will not hold a post-election Lame Duck Session unless an unforeseen emergency occurs. Rep. Price’s resolution states the obvious, saying legislation dealing with card check, energy taxes, or appropriation bills are not considered emergency legislation. According to Tom Price, “Defeated or retiring members of Congress should not be voting on major public policy except in the case of an unforeseen national emergency.”

We urge you to support the resolution, which pledges that Congress will not assemble between the dates of November 2, 2010 and January 3, 2011. In order to vote FOR Tom Price’s resolution, we urge you to vote NO on the motion to table the appeal of the ruling of the chair. Unless there is an unforeseen and sudden emergency, the House will responsibly wait until the new Congress is sworn in before considering controversial legislation that will affect the American people.

We will count your vote on the procedural motion for Congressman Tom Price’s No Lame Duck Resolution as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Freedom Scorecard for 2010. The Economic Freedom Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes members of Congress with voting records that support economic freedom.

Sincerely,
