Press Release

Key Vote to Sustain President Bush's Veto of SCHIP

    10/17/2007

On behalf of nearly 850,000 FreedomWorks members nationwide, I write to urge you to sustain the President’s veto of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).

The President was right to veto this scheme that would expand government healthcare coverage to include groups of people up to 300% above the poverty line and never intended to be covered by this plan.

The passage of this massive package would be a giant step towards government control over the funding and direction of health care in this country. This bill would not only cover poor children, but would cover middle class adults and families that make as much as $80,000 per year.

Funding this assault on individual liberty and personal freedom with a 61 cent cigarette tax hike is also irresponsible. Cigarette taxes are regressive and are an unreliable source of revenue. Funding the SCHIP expansion would require 22 million new smokers over the next 10 years, according to the Heritage Foundation.  How ironic, that some in Congress would propose expanding healthcare programs through such an unhealthy and deadly habit!

FreedomWorks will count your vote as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard. The FreedomWorks Economic Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes legislators who demonstrate voting records in support of economic freedom.

    Sincerely,

    Matt Kibbe
