Dear Senator:

On behalf of hundreds of thousands of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to VOTE YES on the Amendment to the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2009” proposed by Senator Mike Crapo (R-Id.).

Later today, the United States Senate will be casting a series of votes on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s healthcare takeover bill. One such motion, sponsored by Senator Crapo, would specify that “no provision” in the legislation shall result in an increase in federal tax liability for families with incomes under $250,000 annually or individuals with incomes under $200,000.

Senator Crapo’s motion merely ensures that the bill stays true to the promise made to the American people in 2008 by then-Candidate Obama and many other Congressional Democrats.  During the 2nd Presidential debate, Mr. Obama stated: “If you make less than a quarter million dollars a year, you will not see a single dime of your taxes go up.  If you make $200,000 a year or less, your taxes will go down.”

But the Reid government takeover bill does contain tax increases on families making less than $250,000 per year.  Among others, increases include: a federal mandate on insurance that taxes anyone who does not purchase government regulated health insurance, taxes on the Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) used to purchase over-the-counter medication, and taxes on families who use FSAs to pay for special-needs tuition for children with special needs.  Such provisions not only hurt middle class families, they also run counter to the words of the president.  Make no mistake about it, the American people are watching.  We will make sure that they know if their Senator votes against the president’s promise and for burdensome tax hikes on middle and lower class families.

We will count your vote on the Crapo Amendment as a KEY VOTE when calculating the FreedomWorks Economic Freedom Scorecard for 2009. The Economic Freedom Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the Jefferson Award, which recognizes members of Congress with voting records that support economic freedom.

Sincerely,

Matt Kibbe
