As one of our millions of FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote YES on the No Subsidies Without Verification Act, H.R. 2775. Introduced by Congressman Diane Black (R-TN), this bill would help prevent the billions of dollars in subsidies under ObamaCare from being subject to widespread fraud.
Under ObamaCare, individuals purchasing health insurance through one of the new exchanges may be eligible for subsidies (paid to the insurer) to help defray the cost of their insurance premiums. Eligibility for these subsidies would be means-tested; that is, only people under a certain adjusted annual income are supposed to receive them.
In July of 2013, the administration quietly acknowledged that they may not be able to verify individuals’ income status and eligibility for these subsidies. This would mean that individuals could claim a lower income and receive subsidies to which they are not entitled – a clear case of fraud – and the government would have no way to stop them. Since the premium subsidies are expected to cost tens of billions of dollars in 2014 alone, this lack of verification could lead to subsidy fraud imposing a tremendous cost upon taxpayers.
Rep. Diane Black’s bill addresses this problem by simply stating that no premium subsidies shall be released until the Department of Health and Human Services is able to fully verify that it will be able to stop ineligible individuals from taking taxpayers dollars to which they are not entitled by law. This simple defense of your tax dollars ought to be uncontroversial.
I urge you to call your representative and ask him or her to vote YES on No Subsidies Without Verification Act. We may count their vote as a KEY VOTE when calculating FreedomWorks’ Economic Freedom Scorecard for 2013. The Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes Members of Congress who consistently vote to support economic freedom.
