Key Vote YES on Repealing the Death Tax

As one of our over 6.9 million FreedomWorks members nationwide, I urge you to contact your representative and ask him or her to vote YES on H.R. 1105 – the Death Tax Repeal Act. Sponsored by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), this bill would fully eliminate the completely unjust tax on a person’s assets after they die.

Out of all the onerous taxes that are collected across the land, the estate tax – better known as the “death tax” – stands out for its sheer unfairness and the perverse incentives it creates. We are already taxed when we earn income, and we are taxed again if we invest that income and earn a return on that investment. And then when we die, if we’ve saved and invested wisely, the government takes yet another massive helping.

Small business owners and family farms are hardest hit by this tax – which can demand up to 40 percent of their estates. These businesses and farms often do not possess the necessary liquid assets to pay the tax, meaning that they have to shut their doors or sell off land rather than passing along to the next generation.

Instead of celebrating individuals who have saved and worked to build a legacy for their family, the government punishes their hard work. A repeal of this immoral tax is long overdue.

Thus, I hope that you’ll tell your representative to vote YES on the Death Tax Repeal Act, H.R. 1105. We will count votes for this bill towards their score in FreedomWorks’ Economic Freedom Scorecard for 2015. The Scorecard is used to determine eligibility for the FreedomFighter Award, which recognizes members of Congress with voting records that support economic freedom.
