Letter to All Candidates for the NC General Assembly

Dear Candidate:

During the last two legislative sessions, hundreds of CSE activists have worked in their local communities and have traveled to Raleigh to ask their legislators for less taxation, less regulation, and less interference in the free market. The General Assembly will face even greater spending and budget challenges in the next session. Therefore, we are asking that you sign our “No New Tax” pledge for the 2003-2004 sessions of the General Assembly.

This pledge is an important commitment to the taxpayers of North Carolina and your constituents. A firm commitment is needed to show that you will not vote to increase taxes when facing these challenges.

Private Property Rights is another important issue to the 30,000 members of NC Citizens for a Sound Economy. We believe the members of the General Assembly should repeal the “shoreline buffer rules” in the Catawba, Cape Fear, Neuse, and Tar-Pamlico River Basins and should not issue new buffer rules for any other river basin in the state. Private Property rights are fundamental rights to a free society and are guaranteed under the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution. We believe that private property should not be taken by the state without just compensation. This pledge is important to all private property owners in North Carolina.

We are asking every candidate running for the General Assembly to sign these two pledges. Our Taxpayer’s Scorecard, which will be released this spring and again this fall, will include a list of General Assembly candidates and show whether or not they have signed these pledges. Voters will have this important information when making their decisions at the ballot box.

We have enclosed these pledges and ask that you make your commitment to the citizens of North Carolina and return them by Friday, March 29, 2002.

Warmest Regards,

Jonathan Hill

Director
