Nevada Petition Efforts Continue with Success

As more information continues to unfold regarding the Nevada Supreme Court’s decision in early-July to disregard the constitutional amendment mandating a two-thirds supermajority to pass tax increases, CSE’s petition asking the state legislature to investigate the actions of the Supreme Court continues to grow and circulate across the state with great success.

In the two weeks since its launch, the petition has reached citizens throughout the state, including many Assembly lawmakers who share the same concerns regarding the constitutionality and consequences of the Nevada Supreme Court decision.

The effects of the unprecedented decision have surfaced in other states with similar lingering budget problems. In California, the state education chief, with the support of Governor Gray Davis, has asked the Supreme Court to intervene in a budget stalemate by allowing a simple majority to pass proposed tax increases instead of the supermajority that is normally required.

At the same time, Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist Vin Suprynowicz recently wrote that he met with a retired Nevada judge in early July who told him that the Nevada Supreme Court decision was really planned long before Governor Kenny Guinn filed the lawsuit asking the court to find a way to finance the public school budget. According to the retired judge, Gov. Guinn spoke with Justices Bob Rose and Miriam Shearing “some time ago” and received an agreement from them to impose the tax hikes proposed by the governor, predicting long before the lawsuit was filed that the court would vote 6-1 on the issue – the exact outcome of the Supreme Court decision!

This is unacceptable! Nevadans MUST take action on this crucial issue now!

Supreme Court judges that bring their own political agenda into the courtroom are not fit to serve!
