Washington, D.C. - Gov. Susana Martinez (R-N.M) today signed a bill unanimously passed by the state legislature to combat civil asset forfeiture. Nearly 5,000 FreedomWorks activists called the Governor asking her to sign this important piece of legislation. HB 560 requires a criminal conviction before property believed to be used in an illicit activity can be forfeited to the state and removes the profit motive behind seizures by directing proceeds to the state’s general fund.
FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe commented: “Thank you Gov. Martinez for signing this important piece of legislation to protect basic property rights. This is a huge victory for New Mexico, the Constitution, and the nearly 5,000 activists that called her office asking for justice reform. We will continue to fight for these basic constitutional rights at the state and federal levels."
