FreedomWorks today echoed the position of the House Freedom Caucus on raising the debt ceiling and called on Congress to address federal spending and the budget deficit, which is projected to exceed $9.4 trillion over the next ten years.
“The national debt is rapidly approaching $20 trillion, and there is no end in sight to the river of red ink flowing from Washington. There is no getting around the fact that Congress must address the serious fiscal problems facing this country, sooner rather than later. With Republican in the White House and Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress, this is the best opportunity to stop talking about getting the nation’s fiscal house in order and actually do it.
“A debt ceiling increase that isn’t accompanied by meaningful spending cuts is a nonstarter for conservative grassroots activists. They want something real done to rein in federal spending and budget deficits. And waiting until the last-minute to pressure conservatives to vote for a debt ceiling increase without spending cuts would be an unacceptable scenario.”
