ObamaCare & Counting Calories

Bloomberg Businessweek reported yesterday on the nutrition labeling in ObamaCare and how it could hurt small businesses. It says, “When Congress passed the ACA in 2010, it gave the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate nutrition labeling at restaurants and “similar retail food establishments.” The agency published a draft rule setting out new regulations in 2011, but two years later it has yet to finalize the rule.” Representatives Rodgers and Sanchez estimated that first-year compliance costs with these regulations could be more than $1 billion. However, the “Affordable” Care Act would only require businesses with 20 or more chains to comply. Nevertheless, businesses affected will certainly have more trouble in this economic climate. As well, there is no reason the rule won’t be changed in the future to affect mom and pop businesses.
