President Bush Names CSE President Paul Beckner to Trade Advisory Group

On January 15, President Bush named CSE President Paul Beckner to a two-year term on an administration advisory panel on trade. The Advisory Committee for Trade Policy and Negotiations was established in 1974 and consists of 45 representatives from key sectors of the economy. Its purpose is to advise U.S. negotiators as they formulate trade policies and agreements with other nations.

CSE President Paul Beckner commented, “Throughout its history, the United States has been no stranger to the international arena. Trade is a large component of the economic activity in this country and efforts to suppress or thwart trade have imposed significant costs on American consumers.

“Despite the protestations that surround discussions of increased globalization, it has been a dynamic force throughout the centuries. America has prospered through free trade, as have our trading partners. Expanding the global economy offers an opportunity to strengthen economic growth, lower consumer prices, and boost income and the quality of life throughout the world.

“I look forward to working with other members of the trade committee to advise the President on this important issue.”
